¿Machu Picchu is currently closed or will close in the future?
Machu Picchu is currently open to the public. In fact, the archaeological site of Machu Picchu normally remains open all year. The closing of the Inca City responds to the fact that sometime a natural event happens that goes against their infrastructure.
There will be a temporary closure of Machu Picchu mountain. Said closure is programmed as follows:
Mountain Machu Picchu; from 1 – 15 April, 2016.
Mountain Huayna Picchu; from 16 – 30 April, 2016.
This closure does not affect the income of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu was closed in recent years only by due to natural disasters such as landslides and floods. The last prolonged closure occurred in late January 2010. The landslide damaged the railroad that connect Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) with the rest of the country. Being the only path; without trains to Machu Picchu, you can not access the Inca city.
